De Kust

A holiday at the Belgian coast is fully enjoying. Over thirteen seaside resorts are giving the holiday makers exactly the atmosphere they long for, because every seaside resorts has its own character. The one seaside resort is quiet and green, the other one is a bit sophisticated, more urban or more family oriented. The 67 kilometers long coastal strip is best to be explored with the coastal tram, always one around with 70 stop places. The tram is taking you from De Panne nearby the French border just until Oostende nearby the Dutch border. Every seaside resort do have its own charm and particularities.

The sea, the beach, the dikes and the dunes are making one whole. You always find there a place to rest of to enjoy the sun. In winter you could make nice and long walks with the endlessness of the sea at the background. Kids just love the Flemish beaches because here you could build easily sandcastles, have loads of space to kite and could play safely in sea.

The beach is flat and consists of delicate sand. In contrast with many foreign coast area you don’t find here rocks or pebbles. Only breakwaters are taking care of a stone anchor here and there in sea. The sea air is pure, dustfree and iodine-rich. A small sea breeze is taking care of giving you fresh oxygen. It can be felt that the Belgian coast is situated somewhat more up to the South of the Dutch coast. In Belgium the wind is blowing indeed less hard than at the Dutch coast.

De Panne disposes at unspoiled nature reserves and the most beautiful dunes of the entire coast. In Koksijde you could find the Paul Delvauxmuseum. Oostduinkerke is the only coastal town where the shrimps are catched by means of horses. Nieuwpoort has the largest marina of the coast. The family seaside resort Middelkerke is offering lots of recreational possibilities and a casino visited by popular artists. The sophisticated Oostende has kept the atmosphere from old times. It also attracts demanding culture lovers by the Provinciaal Museum for Modern Art and the annual theatre festival Theater aan Zee. Bredene, the camping town of the coast, is the only seaside resort without a dike. The large belt of dunes gave the town the opportunity to create a nudist beach. The beautiful belle-epoque houses are making of De Haan a lively architectural museum. Just as neighbouring town Wenduine it is a relatively quiet seaside resort. This is completely else in Blankenberge, the most popular and also busiest seaside resort, even at night. Zeebrugge with its seaport, fish market and numerous fish restaurants has been called the capital of fish. The tram has a terminal place in Knokke-Heist, with a beach divided over Heist, Duinbergen, Albertstrand, Knokke and Het Zoute. You could find over there Het Zwin, extinct shopping possibilities, marvellous houses and varied cultural facilities.

In the seaside resorts a cheerful flow is dominating. Every day something else could be experienced: building sand castles for the kids, surfing for the sportive Young adults, walking barefoot along the water line for the restseekers. Going all together to a party market, admiring a procession, exploring the hinterland by bike.

Or walking in a cosy way along the many colourful shopping streets. Enjoying a good Belgian beer, a delicious coffee or an exotic icecream at one of the many nice terraces. Observing tourists. Mainly Belgians, but also quite a few Dutchmen, Germans, Frenchmen and British people are seeking the summer atmosphere of the Belgian coast! You could find it all at the Belgian coast. The same coast is also offering another large avantage to its tourists. The most appartments, hotels and villas are nearby the sea and the beach.
